Wedding Reception Centrepieces

How important is a centrepiece? Well, truth be told, a centrepiece helps to tie all the venue décor together into one cohesive theme.

Think about it: You’ve got so many elements of décor, including:

  • Tablecloths (patterned linen of at least two or three colours)
  • Floral arrangements around the venue
  • The bridesmaids’ dresses (usually chosen in the same colour scheme as the wedding)
  • Boutonnieres (tiny floral arrangements for the groomsmen)
  • Bouquets (larger floral arrangements held by the bridesmaids)

And that’s not even getting into the napkins, seat covers, and on and on!

With so many elements of décor, you need something to pull it all together and make it cohesive. With the right centrepiece, you use the same flowers as are included in the bouquets, boutonnieres and floral arrangements around the wedding venue, but in the colours you have chosen for your wedding. By using the right flowers and colours, everything comes together in harmony!

So how do you choose your centrepiece?

First, consider the flowers. What are the flowers you want to have at your wedding? Many people opt for roses, but there are a number of other traditional flowers to choose from–lilies, carnations, freesias, gardenias and hydrangeas. You may even go for a non-traditional flower if you want to make your wedding stand out. By having the flowers as the centrepieces of your wedding tables, you set the tone for the wedding. Flowers make the wedding feel fresh, happy, and alive, and will give it a more traditional feel.

Second, consider the colours. What are your wedding colours? You need to look at not only the colours of the bridesmaids’ dresses, but also the colours of the linenware (tablecloths, napkins, seat covers, etc.). The colours of the centrepieces should match the wedding theme–either complementing or contrasting with the colours effectively. (Your wedding planner can help you choose the right colour scheme…)

Consider the colours of your wedding

Third, consider the size. If you have a lot of guests seated around a small table, you can’t have a huge centrepiece simply because it will occupy vital table space. If your guests are going to be conversing, a towering, bushy centrepiece will just get in the way of conversations over the table. Size the centrepieces just right, ensuring that they are large enough to tie the table décor together, but not so large that they detract from conversation or impair visibility.

Or why not break out of the mould? Instead of opting for flowers, consider:

  • Flower petals floating in decorative bowls of water
  • Elaborate candle arrangements
  • Miniature Zen sand gardens
  • Fruit arrangements (edible as well as decorative!)

Combine as many of these elements as you want, and make your centrepieces stand out from the rest!
