It may sound like an odd question, but the truth is that it has been known to happen. Whether it’s one inappropriate Tweet at the wrong time or posting photos that spoil the fun of the wedding, there’s always a risk that social media could make all of your plans go awry.
But, with the number of smartphones in the country, it can be incredibly difficult to stop social media from ruining your wedding. Or is it? Here are some tips to help you prevent social media from ruining your day:
- Ask the Guests to Avoid Posting — Just because they’re at a #weddingofalifetime, that doesn’t mean your guests have to post the Tweet. Ask them to turn off their phones, or at least to avoid posting the pictures and Tweets to their favorite social media sites. You can have a few ushers standing by to confiscate phones that are misused by guests.
- Let Them Know –– All of the people at the wedding are your friends and family, so be honest with them and tell them that you want to be the one to post your wedding photos to Facebook or Twitter. It is your big day, after all, so don’t be afraid to throw your proverbial weight around when it comes to preventing social media ruining your wedding day.
- Give Em’ a Hashtag –– Want to make sure that all of the wedding photos that go up online are appropriate? Give all of your guests a hashtag (something like #ourweddingphotos), and have them post pictures under that tag. You’ll be able to monitor what’s going up, and you can even snag photos taken by others for your wedding album.
- Be Wary of the Photographer –– A surprising number of wedding photographers include a clause in their contracts that allow them to post the photos to Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter, and there’s nothing you can do about it if you sign the agreement. Make sure to read over the contract carefully just to be certain that you have total control of the pictures taken at your wedding.
- Promote Selfies –– Instead of banning the guests from taking pictures, ask them to stick with selfies – just themselves and their friends. The photos of the bride and groom can be limited to a few select photographers, but at least the guests will still be able to snap away with their smart phones.
- Change Your Facebook Settings –– If you change your Facebook page settings to increase the security to maximum, you’ll have more control over what pictures get posted to your timeline. You can add privacy settings to Instagram as well, ensuring that only the photos you want to be seen are made public.
